Vairamuthu
Vairamuthu Notice

Vairamuthu (Born: July 13, 1953) A Tamil film lyricist, poet, and writer, he composed poetry belonging to the Vanambadi literary tradition. He authored short stories and novels. His standing as a lyricist at the national level is noteworthy. He was a pioneer in introducing the diction of modern poetry along with the style of folklore into film songs. He also penned poetry and stories that critics regard as popularist literature.

Birth, Education

Vairamuthu was born on July 13, 1953, to Ramasamy and Angammal in Vadugapatti, near Periyakulam in the Theni district. He completed his school education in Vadugapatti. He earned a Master's degree in Tamil Literature from Pachaiyappa's College in Chennai.

Personal Life

Vairamuthu married Ponmani. His sons are Madhan Karky and Kabilan. By profession, Vairamuthu is a lyricist in the Tamil film industry.

Institutional works

Vairamuthu's organization, 'Vetrithamizhar Peravai,' undertook the task of drawing young people into the realm of literature.

Film works

Vairamuthu entered the film industry as a lyricist in 1980 through the song "Idhu Oru Ponmaalai Pozhudhu" in the movie Nizhalgal. He wrote over six thousand songs. As a lyricist, he received the National Award six times.

Literature

Poetry

Vairamuthu drew inspiration from the Vanambadi poetic tradition, which viewed poetry primarily as a direct proclamation. However, Vairamuthu did not adopt the progressive politics of the Vanambadi movement. Instead, he crafted his poetry by blending the Vanambadi writing style with the rhetorical flourishes and layered diction characteristic of Dravidian movement public oratory.

Fiction

His works of fiction typically construct contrived scenarios to present conventional, politically correct viewpoints. His narratives are characterized by a loud, emphatic tone and a highly rhetorical, verbose linguistic style. Among his published works, Kallikattu Ithikasam stands out as a notable title; it offers a portrayal of life within the specific environment where he grew up. It is also significant for serving as a repository of the minute details and observations he gathered during his youth. Vairamuthu has authored both novels and short stories.

Controversies

The Sahitya Akademi Controversy

When the Sahitya Akademi Award was announced in 2003 for Vairamuthu, writers and critics alleged that he was in no way deserving of the honor and that he had secured it through various political connections, particularly citing his relationships with influential figures in the literary and political spheres. It was further alleged that the novel for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Award lacked literary merit and was merely a work catering to popular taste.

The Jayakanthan Letter Controversy

In 2015, Vairamuthu submitted a letter to the magazine Kumudam-purportedly written by Jayakanthan-in which Jayakanthan lavishly praised stories Vairamuthu had written for the publication; Kumudam subsequently published the letter. However, Jayakanthan's family members alleged that, at the time, he was in a state of severe physical decline and suffering from memory loss; they claimed that the letter had been forged by Vairamuthu and that the writing style was not Jayakanthan's at all.

Jayakanthan's daughter, Deepalakshmi, stated on Facebook: "Everyone who visited my father knows that, for many months prior, he had been in a condition where he was unable to read or write anything. I regret having to reveal, with immense pain, that he was in a state of amnesia. He would simply hold others' hands like a child, unable to offer any dissent or express any independent opinion regarding whatever they said. Under these circumstances, to claim that he regularly read those stories and he personally wrote and sent a letter of appreciation and that this letter of appreciation can be documented as his 'final piece of writing' is a grave injustice to anyone who cherishes him and his literary legacy."

Sexual allegations.

In 2018, singer Chinmayi Sripatha publicly accused Vairamuthu of sexual harassment. A total of 17 women have since accused him of sexual harassment and intimidation. Complaints were filed with the National Commission for Women with evidence. But no investigation was conducted into the allegations.

Andal controversy

In 2018, Vairamuthu delivered a speech suggesting that Andal might belong to the Daasi community, a statement that Vaishnavites vehemently condemned.

ONV Award controversy

In May 2021, Vairamuthu was selected for the ONV Award in Trivandrum. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) criticized the decision, accusing Vairamuthu as a sexual abuser, and the award was revoked.

Jnanpith controversy

When Vairamuthu was awarded the Jnanpith Award for the year 2026, it was strongly opposed in the Tamil modern literary community. Vairamuthu was criticized as a mere propaganda writer without any literary merit. Critics stated that awarding him the Jnanpith had belittled the Tamil language. Almost all known modern writers in Tamil condemned his Jnanpith Award, and in a collective memorandum submitted to the Jnanpith Committee and signed by 200 writers, they claimed it is an insult to Tamil literature. In a separate memorandum signed by 850 well-known writers and readers, the group urged the Jnanapith committee to revoke the award in order to save the honor of modern Tamil literature.

Jeyamohan the well-known Tamil writer condemned the award as a rebuke towards modern Tamil writing from the Jnanpith committee and declared a major literary award, the Living Tamil Award for World Literature, to save the honor of the Tamil literary field.

Assessment

Vairamuthu is regarded as a lyricist who has achieved success in the realm of Tamil film lyrics; however, in his capacity as a poet and writer, he is assessed as operating primarily within the sphere of popular readership. His work is largely detached from the realm of literature.

In the wake of Vairamuthu receiving the Jnanpith Award, a public petition signed by over two hundred Tamil writers offered the following assessment of his writing: "Vairamuthu's writings fail to capture, with any genuine depth of inquiry, the profound values, cultural heritage, or authentic quests of Tamil society. His literary identity is defined merely by commercialized writing-adorned with superficial, ornate rhetoric. True literature serves to sculpt life itself; yet, Vairamuthu's works have been created predominantly with the profit-driven motives of the film industry and the pursuit of fleeting fame."

Works

Vairamuthu wrote 13 collections of poems, ten novels, and one short story collection. He published ten non-fiction works and one autobiography.
