Literary Place

Uma Maheswari's fictional world is pretty confined, like Emily Dickinson she leads a life confined to the household. But within the small world Uma Maheswari depicted the dangers of women's lives, their quest for liberation as well as their feelings of betrayal and hatred. She has no common idealistic views like feminism. He spontaneously observes human emotions and behaviors and converts them to fiction. But her works are more vocal about women's liberation than the works written by feminists in Tamil. Her stories are such that turn feminism into a search for identity as a woman, an inquiry into the meaning of existence.

K. Mohanarangan states "her works do not show any bitterness towards the external factors that play in to her thoughts nor have any hatred against them". Although Ambai's influence is on Uma Maheshwari, Gnani Sankaran assesses her as having greatly transcended from Ambai's art. Jeyamohan states, "Uma Maheshwari is one of the foremost female fiction writers of my generation. Her poems have beautiful lines that meets both the beauty of language and emotionality. Her works are deeply emotional".
