Kutti Revathi

Kutti Revathi (b. in 1974) is a poet, writer, lyricist, documentary film director and a Siddha doctor by profession.

Personal Life

Kutti Revathi was born in 1974 to Suyambulingam in Tirunelveli. She studied Siddha Medicine and Surgery for her under graduation. She completed her doctoral research in medical anthropology at the Madras Institute of Development Studies in Chennai. She is married to R. R. Srinivasan ('Kaanchanai' Srinivasan), a documentary filmmaker.

Literary Life

Kutti Revathi has published 12 compilations of her poetry. Her complete collection of poems is released by 'Ezhutthu Prasuram' publications. In addition to poems, she has published four short stories collections viz.- 'niraya araigaL ulla veedu', ViralgaL', 'Meemozhi', 'Iyakkam'. She has written a novel 'Azhiyac chol'. Pramil and Devadevan are her favourite poets. She is the editor of the quarterly magazine Panikkudam' and owns a publishing house in the same name. Panikkudam publishes the works of feminist litterateurs only.

Literary Position

'Niraiya araigal ulla veedu' is a short story collection written in a poetic form.

" The stories of this collection, which are set in the backdrop of jungles and oceans, Metaphorically and directly address the intricacies in relationships and the struggles of men and women trying to break the clutches imposed by relationships", says writer Ambai about this collection.

"Kutti Revathi's initial short stories subtly talked about the ignored mind spaces of women. The crux of her stories addressed the eternal complexities of the physical union of a man and a woman. Initially, Kutti Revathi's stories addressed only desire in different formats. Later she has written giving due importance to other issues" says Professor Subramani Ramesh.

Movie, Documentary

She directed the movie 'Siragu'. She directed documentaries on the life of the Irula community and of Kamala Das. She directed a documentary on Abraham Pandithar's 'Karunamirtha Saagaram'. The documentary was produced by Musician A. R. Rahman's foundation and screened at Tamil Vizhaa of the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America, New York. (FETNA).

Awards

  • Received Sigaram 15: Faces of Future award for literature from India Today magazine.
  • Received Sahitya Academy's grant in 2005 to meet leading Indian litterateurs.
