Kavya Shanmugasundaram (born 30 December 1949) is a professor, researcher, publisher, orator and a magazine editor.

Birth, Education

Kavya Shanmugasundaram's given name was Shanmuga Sundara Pandiyan. He was born on December 30, 1949 in Irukanthurai, Tirunelveli district as the eldest son of Sudalaimuthu Devar and Isakiyammal.

Kavya Shanmugasundaram finished his primary education in Kalangarai and higher education in Vadakankulam. He got his under graduate degree in Tamil from St. Xavier's College, Palayankottai and his post graduate degree from Pachaiyappa College, Chennai.

Personal Life

Kavya Shanmugasundaram's wife's name is Muthulakshmi. He has two children; son was named Muthukumar and daughter, Dr. Kavya. In 1978, he worked as a professor of Tamil at St. Joseph's College, Bangalore. After retiring in 2006, he joined the publishing industry.

Educational Works

Kavya Shanmugasundaram worked as executive committee member at Chennai Kural Peedam. He also served as a member of the Sahitya Academy Advisory Committee.

Journalism

Kavya Shanmugasundaram found and edited Independent Magazines like Padigal, Inge Indru, Vithyasam and Thannanane magazine which were about Folkloristics.

Research

Kavya Shanmugasundaram wrote and published many research books on folklore. He worked as a Senior Researcher at the Semmozhi Central Tamil Research Institute and conducted several studies. His notable books include "Nattupura Arangiyal", "Kalanthorum Kannagi Kathaigal" and "Nattupura Vazhipadum Panbadum".

Publishing Works

Shanmugasundaram started Kavya Publishing House in 1981 in the name of his daughter. He has published many books related to education.

Writing Works

In 1972, Kavya Shanmugasundaram compiled his poems and published a book titled "Kadambam". In the year 1982, he wrote his first novel "Kannadiyar Magal" and published it through Kavya Publishing House. After that he wrote many novels and short stories. He published a collection of short stories ("Kalavu") in 1995. The first play "Agni" was released in 1998.

  • "Varam" collection of short stories won the Coimbatore Lily Devasigamani Prize.
  • "Arora" novel won the Arts Literature Council's Best Novel Award.
  • "Anthi" novel received an award from the Tiruppur Arts and Literature Council and the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association.
  • In 1998, the Tiruppur Tamil Sangam chose the play "Agni" as the best play.
