Kasiyaban (B. Kulathu Iyer) (1919-2004) was a Tamil writer who wrote poems and a novel called Asadu. He rose to fame from the literary group in Thiruvananthapuram.

Birth, Education

Kasiyaban was born in 1919 in Thiruvananthapuram. Studied BA in Philosophy. He studied Tamil as a second language at Kerala University. Worked in Life Insurance Corporation. He was very good in Malayalam because of the primary education in Kerala. Also proficient in both Sanskrit and English. He studied international literature deeply including Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Mowni and Ka.Na. Subramaniam were his favorite Tamil writers.

Literary Significance

Kulathu Iyer, started writing at the age of 53 under the pseudonym 'Kasiyaban'. His Muhammad kathaikal' were published in Kanaiyazhi and received wider readership. A pioneering literary technique was used in the stories, in which one character, Muhammad, appeared in various stories. Kasiyaban's first novel was Asadu.

Kasiyaban's novel Asadu was published in 1978. Fifteen years later, its reprint was published in 1994 by Virutcham Publishing House. Writer Nakulan wrote the preface for this.

Kasiyaban adopted an aesthetic style of brevity. He tried to convey emotions or scenes as succinctly as possible. Sundara Ramaswamy mentions that his Asadu is one of the best novels in Tamil. 'Kasiyaban's specialty is the subtle ironic tone he creates in his writing, which is wonderful,' notes author S. Ramakrishnan[1].
