Verottam

Verottam (1944) is an incomplete novel written by Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan. He wrote about male-female relationship. The novel seeks to portray an ideal relationship between man and woman and the contrary force, lust.

Publication

Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan wrote this as a serial in Kalamohini magazine. Five chapters were published with the titles adolescence, encounter, rooting, and resistance(Yowanakalakkam, Sandhippu, Verottam, Edhirpu). The last chapter of the novel was published in the April, 1944 issue. On the 27th of the same month Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan passed away at the age of forty-two. This novel did not get finished. The story was included in Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan's Siru Velicham collection in 1969.

Synopsis

The novel narrates the story through different angles and methods such as dialogues and letters. Characters and their thoughts takes precedence over the story itself. Lalita falls in love with college student Chandrasekaran because of his intellect. The couple decides to get married and live in the same house. But until Lalita's pious parents agree, they decide to live in the same house without sex. Lalita's friend Sulochana and Chandrasekaran's friend Sundaram were with them. Chandrasekaran's parents in Thiruvazhunthur find out about their lives when Sulochana writes this in a letter to her sister Padmasani. Chandrasekaran's parents meet Lalita in person and end up seeing Lalita's etiquettes and character. Chandrasekaran's father returns home and decides to get them married in Thiruvazhunthur. The plaintiffs in town are outraged. Lalita's mother approves the marriage while her elder brother opposes. The reason is that he believes a rumor that Chandrasekaran's mother is a tyrant. The novel stops at the place where Chandrasekaran's sister writes a letter to her brother asking him to bring home the sister in law to Thiruvazhunthur.

Literary Significance

This novel is an early work on how the human psyche works in Tamil. Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan used letter format to describe what the characters think, a technique in story telling and and how different characters approach the same problem from different angles.
