R. Giridharan

R Giridharan alias Giridharan Rajagopalan is a Tamil writer. He writes short stories, essays on music and criticism. Some of his stories set against the background of western music are unique in Tamil literature.

Birth & Youth

Girdharan was born to Rajagopalan and Padma on June 11, 1979 in Tindivanam. He did his schooling at Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School in Pondicherry and completed his Engineering degree at the Pondicherry Engineering College.

Family

Giridharan married Chithralekha in 2006. They have two daughters, Aathira and Akshara. Currently Giridharan lives in the United Kingdom, working in an insurance software development firm.

Literary Contribution

In 2010, Giridharan translated a book on introducing Carnatic music for the lay listener into Tamil. His first short story collection, Kaalathin Mudivukkaaga Olitha Isai was published in 2020 as a Tamizhini Publication release. Giridharan considers writers Ashokamitran, Pramil , Sundara Ramaswamy and Jeyamohan as his literary Ideals. He has been part of the editorial boards of several Tamil internet magazines, including Solvanam [1] , Pathaakai [2] and Omnibus. He is one of the founding members of the London Tamil Literary group.

Giridharan’s short stories span across a variety of backgrounds. Specifically his critically acclaimed two stories Irul Munagum paathai and Kaalathin Mudivukkaaga Olitha Isai were written against the background of the life of two great musical geniuses. The depth and intensity of art, its greatness, and the downfall of the artists are some of the themes that repeat in Giridharan’s stories. Giridharan has also written science fiction stories that grapple with existential questions about the human condition.

Giridharan’s writing style is intense, free flowing and metaphorical. This language style is an alternate to modernist style of writing. “A uniqueness which is expressed from a historical perspective underlie Giri’s stories. This makes his story world singular,” says critic and writer Suresh Pradeep.
