Keeralgal (1975) is a novel written by Isaac Arumairasan. It is a propaganda novel that tries to make a connection between Christianity and Communist Ideals. It is said to be the first novel written in Tamil based on Liberation Theology.

Writing, Publication

Keeralgal was written in 1978 by Prof. Isaac Arumairasan at Marthandam Christian College. It was published by the Nagercoil Christian Literary Society.

Synopsis

The story takes place in a town called Punnaikayal near Nagercoil. Christian landlords oppress and exploit Christian people. Chellappa, who steals coconuts from Mettukudiyan's coconut grove due to poverty, is attacked by them. He attacks Mettukudian's son and goes into hiding without getting caught by the police. His father Vedamani Vathiyar thinks his actions are sinful according to Christianity and later finds that his actions are also suitable for Christianity.

Literary Place

It is a novel with an artificial plot that sounds straight up propaganda. But Isaac Arumairasan, who tried to connect Christianity and Communism, paved the way for the Liberation Theology that later developed. He continued to use the term Christian Communism for his policy. The novel is noteworthy as the first novel on Christian Communism or Liberation Theology.
