Kalaimagal Magazine (1932) is a Tamil magazine that is published monthly. It was started with the purpose of highlighting the traditional, cultural, and national vision. Pudhumaipithan’s stories were published in the initial days. However, it was entirely changed into a family magazine later.
Publication, History
Narayanaswami Iyer, the founder of the Madras Law Journal, founded Kalaimagal in 1932. D.S Ramachandra Iyer was the first editor of Kalaimagal. P. Sri Acharya, S. Vaiyapurippillai, P.N. Appuswamy, Prof. K.A. Neelakanda Shastri, K. Sri. Sri and many other scholars were on the advisory board. Ki. Va Jagannathan was appointed as the editor in 1937. Currently, Kizhambur Sankara Subramanian is the editor of Kalaimagal.
Literary Contributions
Kalaimagal attempted to amalgamate old literature with new literature during the initial stages of the magazine. U. V. Swaminatha Iyer, Desigavinayagam Pillai, T. K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar, and others have written for this magazine. Manikodi’s writers including Pudhumaipithan wrote for Kalaimagal magazine for a brief period during the closing of Mankodi and the opening of Kalamogini. N. Pichamoorthi won the first prize in a short story competition held by Kalaimagal in 1935. There were many women writers when Kalaimagal was turned into a family magazine. Kalaimagal created a unit with writers like Anuthama, C.S Rajamma, R. Chudamani, Rajam Krishnan, Kamala Sadagopan. They’re commonly referred to as Kalaimagal writers. Many writers made their debut in Tamil through the “Narayanasamy Iyer Ninavivu Novel Competition” and the “Amarar Ramaratnam Ninavivu Short Story Competition” organized by Kalaimagal. For instance, Akilan, a writer who won the Jnanpith Award later, made his debut in 1944 and won the Narayanasamy Iyer Ninavivu Prize for his novel Pen.
