Opus format originated from the Greek word Lyric. Lyra, the instrument used for singing the song, became the origin of the word Lyric. This format has got minimum number of stanzas to present the emotion or thought of a person.

Isaipadal (Romantic Poetry)

The researcher M. Vethasagayakumar points the presence of Isaipadal in all the ancient civilizations. The ancient Romantic Poetries can be found in Egypt, Hebrew and Latin languages. The researchers mention the European Renaissance period as the time of Romantic Poems. The 19th Century Romantic poets used the Romantic Poetry format for their poems. The famous Romantic Poems were written by the poets Shelley, Keats and Byron.

Isaipadal in Tamil Literature

Tamil Isaipadal (Romantic Poem) of the 20th Century got influence due to the impact created by the Romantic Poets. M. Vethasagayakumar mentions the presence of Isaipadal- like poems in the Sangam Classical literature.


Bharathi, a keen music composer, wrote songs which can be considered as the best examples of the Isaipadal. His songs are particular about displaying the specific mood. His patriotic songs are the best examples of Isaipadalkal (Romantic Poems)

Bharathidasan, and Kavimani Desigavinayakam Pillai the contemporaries of Bharathi used Isaipadal format in their songs.  Isaipadal became less influential after Puthukavithai (New Poetry) format became popular.


The Tamil film song composers, particularly Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram and Kannadasan started showing interest in using the Isaipadal format for their songs. There is a difference of opinion among the critics to accept the literary significance of Kannadasan. The literary significance Isaipadal after Kannadasan period is questionable.

Tamil Classical Isaipadal

The classical Tamil Isaipadal cannot be considered to belong to this particular format. Classical musical format has got a very long tradition.
