La. Sa. Ramamirtham (La. Sa. Ra or Lalgudi Saptarishi Ramamrutham) (October 30, 1916 - October 30, 2007) was a Tamil writer who wrote short stories and novels. His writing style is famous for its conscious puns and subtle cultural references. La. Sa. Ra's stories blend emotional upheavals, micro detailing, and Hindu Symbolism. His musical and mystical experiences reflect in his stories.

Birth, Youth

La. Sa. Ramamirtham was born on October 30, 1916 in Bangalore, Karnataka to parents Saptarishi and Shrimathi. He grew up in Ayyampettai village near Kancheepuram. La. Sa. Ra's father Saptarishi introduced Tamil and English literature to him. La. Sa. Ra. gained interest and expertise in language by the age of 12. He has completed his schooling till SSLC.

Personal Life

La. Sa. Ra worked as a typist for three years at Vauhini Pictures. La. Sa. Ra became a banker on the advice of movie director K. Ramnath to pursue a career in writing. He worked in the Punjab National Bank for 30 years. La. Sa. Ra retired in 1976 after working as the branch manager at Tenkasi and settled in Chennai.

Haimavati was the wife of La. Sa. Ramamirtham. They have four sons Jayaraman, Saptarishi, Chandrasekaran, Srikanth and a daughter Gayatri. La. Sa. Ra's son, La. Ra Saptarishi is writing articles and stories in Tamil.

Literary Life

La. Sa. Ra
Beginning

La. Sa. Ra's grandfather was a Tamil pundit. He wrote songs about 'Perunthiru' (Lakshmi) as daily worship, like a continued meditation. La. Sa. Ramamirtham says that he took this method as an example. He recalled in an interview with Kumudham Junction magazine that he began writing at sixteen. His son Saptarishi has written in his book about La. Sa. Ra that his first work was a story Babuji written in English at eighteen. It was a story about an elephant turning wild. La. Sa. Ra's final story was Boyfriend.

Thi Ja Ranganathan (Thi. Ja. Ra) was La. Sa. Ra's literary mentor. He introduced La. Sa. Ra to the Tamil literary personalities of the Manikodi era. La. Sa. Ra says he actively participated in the literary discussions with the Manikodi writers at the Marina beach everyday evening. He notes that these were like a literary workshop and introduced him to world literature.

Novels

Initially La. Sa. Ra wrote only short stories. He his first novel 'Puthra' was written in 1966, at his fiftieth age. It was published by Vasagar Vattam. In 1970, La. Sa. Ra wrote the novel, Abitha.

Biographies

La. Sa. Ra wrote two biographical books, Paarkadal & Sindhanathi from his memory. (லா.ச.ரா பாற்கடல், சிந்தா நதி என்னும் இரண்டு தன் வரலாற்றுக் குறிப்புகளை நினைவோட்ட முறையில் எழுதினார்). This was published in Dinamani Kathir magazine. இவை தினமணிக் கதிர் இதழில் வெளிவந்தன. லா.ச.ராவுக்கு 1989-ல் சாகித்திய அகாதமி விருது பெற்றுத் தந்த சுயசரிதை சிந்தாநதி தினமணி கதிரில் தொடராக வந்தது.

Style

தொடக்க காலக் கதைகளில் இருந்தே லா.ச.ராமாமிர்தம் தனக்கென ஒரு நடையை உருவாக்கி கொண்டார். உச்சாடனத்தன்மை கொண்டதும், இசையோட்டம் ஊடாடுவதும், சொல்விளையாட்டுக்களும் படிமங்களும் பயின்றுவருவதுமான நடை அது. லா.ச.ரா கதைகள், நாவல்கள், கட்டுரைகள் அனைத்திலும் அந்த நடையே உள்ளது மாயத்தன்மையும் உளமயக்கும் கொண்ட கூறுமுறை அவருடையது. ‘கண்ணாடியில் பிம்பம் விழும் சத்தம் எனக்கு கேட்கிறதே, உனக்கு கேட்கிறதோடி?” என்னும் அவருடைய வரி லா.ச.ரா நடைக்கான உதாரணம்.

எழுத்துமுறை

லா.ச.ரா தன் எழுத்துமுறை பற்றி இவ்வாறு சொல்கிறார் “ எத்தனை விதங்களில் எழுதினாலும், நான் என் பிறவியுடன் கொண்டு வந்திருக்கும் என் கதைதான்;உலகில் – அது உள் உலகமோ வெளியுலகமோ, அதில் நடக்கும் அத்தனையிலும், அத்தனையாவும் எனக்குக்கிட்டுவது என் நோக்குத்தான். ஆகையால் நான் எனக்காக வாழ்ந்தாலும் சரி, யாருக்காக அழுதாலும் சரி, அப்படி என் நோக்கில் நான்தான் இயங்குகிறேன், என் நோக்கில் நான் காண்பவர் காணாதவர் எல்லோரும் என் கதையுடன் பிணைக்கப்பட்டவரே. என் கதையின் பாத்திரங்களால், அவர்கள் ப்ரவேசங்களில் அவர்களை அடையாளம் கண்டு கொள்ளும் வேளைகளில் தான், நெடுநாளைய பிரிவின் பின் சந்திக்கும் பரபரப்பு, பரிமளம், ஜபமாலையின் நெருடலின் ஒவ்வொரு மணியும் தன் முறை வந்ததும்,தான் தனி மணி என அதன்மேல் உருவேறிய நாமத்தின் தன் பிரக்ஞையை அடையும் புது விழிப்பு.”(கங்கா -முன்னுரை )

தமிழில் நவீன இலக்கியம் யதார்த்தவாதம் வழியாகவே அறிமுகமாகியது. சமூகச்சூழலையும் உறவுகளையும் யதார்த்தமாக முன்வைப்பவை நவீனத்தமிழிலக்கியப் படைப்புகள். அச்சூழலில் முன்பில்லாத ஒன்றாக லா.ச.ராவின் படைப்புகள் வெளியாயின. அவை உணர்ச்சிமிக்க மொழிநடையும் மிகையதார்த்தச் சித்தரிப்பும் கொண்டவை. தொன்மங்கள், மாயநிகழ்வுகள், கனவுகள் ஊடாடிக்கலந்த புனைவுலகு லா.ச.ராவுடையது. அவர் அதற்காக உருவாக்கிக்கொண்ட நடை மிகையுணர்ச்சியும் அரற்றல் தன்மையும் கலந்த அகவயத்தன்மை கொண்டது. ஆகவே தமிழிலக்கியத்தில் மிகத்தனித்துவம் கொண்ட படைப்பாளியாக லா.ச.ராமாமிர்தம் நிலைகொள்கிறார்.

படிமங்களை வாரியிறைத்துச் செல்லும் எழுத்து லா.ச.ராவுடையது. பெண்மையின் ஒளியை, அழகை, வர்ண ஜாலங்களைத் தேடுவது தான் லா.ச.ரா எழுத்து கொள்ளும் ஆன்மீகமான தேடலாக இருக்கிறது. பெண்ணை காதலுடனும் மறைஞானத் தன்மையுடனும் அணுகுகிறார். அவருடைய கதைகளில் அவருடைய குடும்ப மரபாக வந்த ஸ்ரீவித்யா உபாசனை (தேவி உபாசனை) ஓர் உளநிலையாக வெளிப்பட்டபடியே இருக்கிறது. லா.ச.ரா வின் படைப்புகள் வீட்டையும், குடும்பத்தையும், பெண்களின் ஆளுமைகளையும் சித்தரிப்பவை. உறவுகளை விட்டு வெளியே செல்லாத உலகம் அவருடையது.

’லா.ச. ராமாமிருதம் வாசனைத் திரவியங்களின் நறுமணங்களைத் தமிழாக மாற்றிக்கொண்டு வந்தவர். இவருடைய கதைகளில் மரபு, விடுதலை பெற்று மனிதத் தன்மையின் சாராம்சத்தை எட்டாமல், வைதிக வாழ்வின் சாயல்களில் அழுந்திக் கிடக்கிறது. நெருக்கடிகளை உருவாக்கித் தீவிர அனுபவங்களைத் தரவல்லவர் என்றாலும் இவ்வனுபவங்களின் அர்த்தம் நமக்குப் புரிவதில்லை. பதற்றங்கள் கொண்ட உணர்ச்சிப் பிழம்பான இவரது கதாபாத்திரங்கள் கூடக் குடும்பத்துக்குள் முட்டி மோதிக்கொண்டு கிடக்கிறார்களே தவிர, எந்தத் தளைகளையும் அறுப்பதில்லை. உணர்ச்சிகரமான சம்பவங்களை உச்சஸ்தாயியில் வெளிப்படுத்தும் திறனிலும் மொழியின் புதிய பரிமாணங்களிலும் பிணைந்து கிடக்கிறது இவரது உயிர்’ என்று சுந்தர ராமசாமி லா.ச.ராமாமிர்தத்தை தன் கட்டுரையொன்றில் மதிப்பிடுகிறார்[1].

Death

La. Sa. Ramamirtham passed away at the age of 92 on October 30, 2007 at Chennai.
