Kamala Sadagopan (September 5, 1935 - November 14, 2012) was a Tamil writer, journalist, and the wife of film director Chitralaya Gopu.
Personal Life
Kamala Sadagopan was born on September 5, 1935. Kamala married Sadagopan alias Chitralaya Kopu. She had four sons. Her son T.A. Narasimhan writes stories under the pseudonym Kalachakaram Narasimha. Another son Sri Ram is a playwright and a screenplay writer.
Literary Life
Kamala started writing well before her marriage and was the co-editor of the Jaganmohini magazine. One of her stories was published in Vijaya Vikatan magazine when she was 16.
Her novels were published in a series in Kalaimagal magazine. Kadhavu is a noteworthy novel among her works.
Politics
Kamala Sadagopan was a Congress supporter. She attended the Avadi Congress Conference in 1955. She joined an organization called Mahatmaji Seva Sangam and did social service.
Journalism
She worked from home as the co-editor of Jaganmohini magazine. She was the editor of Mangayar Malar Magazine in 1978 before it was taken over by the Kalki administration.
Death
Kamala Sadagopan passed away on 14 November 2012.
Awards
Kalaimagal Narayanasamy Iyer Memorial prize for Kadhavu novel.
The novel Padigal won the 1978 Government of Tamil Nadu Prize for best book.
Literary Significance
Kamala Sadagopan was one of the few women writers in Tamil to emerge from the Kalaimagal magazine circle. Primarily set in a Brahmin environment, her stories are told through family backgrounds, traditional perspectives, superficial complexities, and dramatic moments. Written for the common reader, they were intended mainly for entertainment value.
