Udukkaipaatu is a kind of song that is sung while playing the percussion instrument called Udukkai. This art is different from the Udukkadi performed to ward off the demon which is known as the Kodangi. Udukkaipaatu is a performing art of a story that is sung accompanied by a Udukkai

Performing Method

Pambai Udukkai Pattu

Previously, a temple art or a ritual art; it is now performed outside the temple premises for entertainment.

In this performance, one person plays the Udukkai. A woman or a man dressed like a woman sings the story and dances. For the accompaniment, there will be two or three more people. Stories like Annamar Samy, Kathavarayan, Madurai Veeran, Nallathangal and Kovalan are performed in Udukkaipaatu. Mostly Annamar Samy story is performed in Udukkaipaatu.

This art is performed for the worship as well as for the traditional vows made to a deity. There is a belief that it will rain if Udukkaipaatu is performed. While there is no limit for Udukkaipaatu's duration, this is usually performed for three hours for a day. The play duration depends on length of the story.

This Udukkaipaatu art is largely performed by Vannar and Navithar community artists.

Udukkaipaatu is performed in the regions of Coimbatore, Erode, Udumalaipettai, Palani and Trichy.
