Udayasankar SP (June 10, 1972) is a Malaysian Indian writer who writes in the national language of Malaysia. He has contributed to literature in many fields like short stories, essays, columns, poems, reviews and novels. He also writes in English. Known by the pseudonyms 'Shafie Uzein Gharib', 'Hanumam 0' and 'Leonard Loar'.

Birth, Education

Udayasankar SP was born on June 10, 1972 to 'Awlong' Taiping to Narayanan - Sarojini couple, as their eighth child. He did his primary education at 'Awlong' Convent School. He did his secondary education at Ritsuan Secondary School. Udayasankar SP holds a BA in Media and a MA in National Literature from the University of Malaya.

Personal Life

Udayasankar SP worked at Radio and Television Malaysia (RTM) as editor and anchor of Malay language news, press commentator and supervisor of natural disaster division from 1996 to 2020. Udayasankar SP was a part-time lecturer at several private colleges and universities from 1996 to 2010, a news editor at Bernama Radio 24 from 2008-2009, and an assistant editor at Sinar Harian newspaper from 2010 to 2011. Since 2011, he has provided his services in the fields of language, writing, media and stage speaking. Udayasankar SP has extensive experience as host, speaker, sponsor, coordinator, translator and guide in various state, national and international events. He has been a full-time literary activist since 2011. He married Prabhavathi in 2000 and has two daughters in the name of Devishini & Prabha Shankari.

Literary Life

Udayasankar SP started reading Malay and English literature in primary school and started writing stories in Malay and English in secondary school. He has written in high school journals. In 1992, his short story 'Ayya' was first published in the magazine 'Dayvan Belajar' and introduced him as a writer.

Literary Activities

For the past 30 years, Udayasankar SP has been contributing to literature in Malay and English in various fields such as short stories, essays, columns, poems, reviews and novels. He has a keen critical view and has brought out social issues through writing. He has voiced for identity issues of minorities, Interlok, Royalty. Due to this, he has been embroiled in many controversies. In an April 11, 2022 social media post, he was arrested and later released on charges of insulting the Prophet. In August 1999, he started the organization 'Kavyan'[1] and has been doing literary work, and has been providing short story, story, novel, poetry and essay writing workshops to those who are interested in the national language. He is also compiling the works of other writers writing in the national language and publishing them as books.

Awards

On August 24, 2008, Udayasankar SP received the Universal Peace Federation's 'Ambassador of Peace' award for promoting racial unity in writing.
