R. Sarangapani (September 18, 1925 – August 23, 2010) was a Tamil professor, Tamil scholar and Researcher. He worked as a Tamil professor and researcher in educational institutions including Karaikudi Alagappa College, Annamalai University and Tamil University. R. Sarangapani wrote books by doing comparative research on Thirukkural.

Birth, Education

R. Sarangapani was born on September 18, 1925 in Devangudi near Chidambaram to P. Rasagopal Malavarayar and Sanamaalikai Ammaiyar.

R. Sarangapani did his primary education in Devangudi, up to eighth standard at Bhuvanagiri Kazhagam High School and sixth standard at Chidambaram Pachaiyappan School, graduating in 1942. R. Sarangapani graduated from Annamalai University in 1947 with Pulavar pattam (Degree as a Poet), got B.O.L degree from Chennai University on 1949, eventually completing post graduation in 1955, M. Lit degree in 1962 and eventually getting doctorate in 1969.

Personal Life

On June 15, 1949, R. Sarangapani got married to Dhanalakshmi Ammaiyar in Kudimoolai. His son Anthuvan is working as a doctor in England.

Educational Work

In 1949, R. Sarangapani joined the Karaikudi Alagappa College as a lecturer and rose to become a professor and head of the Tamil Department. From 1979 he was also the Director of the Institute of Higher Education for three years. R. Sarangapani got the opportunity to work with V.Subha. Manickanar for more than 20 years.

From 1982 to 1986, R. Sarangapani worked as a Distinguished Professor at Thanjavur Tamil University and rose to head of the Department of Tamil Literature.

From 1988-1994 R. Sarangapani worked as a Distinguished Professor at Thirukkural Laboratory, Annamalai University.

R. Sarangapani designed the subjects in the Tamil Textbook Committee of Bharathiar and Bharathidasan Universities.

In Tamil Nadu and Kerala universities, the textbooks include Iyarkai Virundhu, Kural Virundhu, Paripadal Thiran, and Thirukkural on Siddhar literature.

Literary Work

  • R. Sarangapani wrote and published Sangam Literary Collection (two volumes) while teaching in Tamil University.
  • As the vice-president of the Karaikudi Tamil Sangam, R. Sarangapani conducted many Sangam literature classes.
  • R. Sarangapani conducted Thirukkural classes and Purananooru classes at Chidambaram Thillai Tamil Mandram.
  • R. Sarangapani attended and addressed the Jaffna Thirukkural conference.
  • On the advice of V. Subha Manickanar, R. Sarangapani compiled the differential texts for Thirukkural that have been published so far, and wrote a book on Thirukkural differential texts by identifying the correct ones and explaining the reasons for it.

Demise

R. Sarangapani died in the town Chidambaram Annamalai on August 23, 2010.

Suba Veerapandian, who was his student at Alagappa College, mentions in his book Vandhathum Vazhvathum that "What Sarangapaniyar did was not the job of teaching rather a charity".
