Ottuchedi (1955), a novel written by Tha.Na. Kumarasaami, is a simple tale of a love affair, set in the backdrop of an entire village being displaced due to the Poondi reservoir project. It is considered to be the first novel that talked about the destructive side of development.

Creation, Publication

This novel was serialized in the Anandha Vikatan in 1954 and was published as a novel in 1955.

Synopsis

Songu is married to Kannamma. He realizes that Kadhirvelu, the disabled soldier who just got back from the war, is his wife's lover. He lets his wife go with live with her lover in the end.

Literary Significance

The novel describes an entire village being displaced by the Poondi reservoir project which was launched to deal with the water scarcity in Chennai. It is considered the first novel in Tamil that dealt with the destructive side of development. Also, the novel shows the displacement of the village as a parallel to Songu, letting go of his old life and reinventing himself.
