Odhaalan Koottam (group) or Odhaalan Kulam (clan) is one of the sub-groups of the Kongu Vellala Gounders community. It can be said to be a clan. It is speculated that the name Odhaalan may have come from the Tamil word Odhudhal (recitation).

History

Earlier, Karur (Vanchi) and Dharapuram were the cities of the Cheras. The myth is that the Chola who married off his daughter to the Chera, offered 40,000 Vellalar families as dowry per the wishes of his daughter and sent them with her. It is believed that the title Kolsenai Mandradi' was given to Odhaalan clan by the Cholas. They built the Vaduganathar temple and the temple at Kudimangalam in Patharasankottai. Chola Thozhan Perumal Odhaalan was a chieftain who ruled the Kodumudi region during the 17th century.

Odhaalan Koottam occupied the places like Paranchervazhi, Perunthozhu, Alagumalai, Kundadam, Vellakoil, Kandiyan Koil, Kannapuram, Nizhali, Koduvai, Kottramangalam, Thiruvachi, Kurumbala Mahadevi, Chithampoondi, Kolanalli, Kodumudi and Vadakarai Attur.

Literature

Periya Perumal belonging to Odhaalan Koottam obligated Chinna Thambi Pavalar to compose the poem Azhagumalai Kuravanchi.
