M. A. Susila

M. A. Susila (February 27, 1949) is a short story writer, translator, public speaker, feminist, and blogger. She is most known as a professor, speaker, and translator. She is currently residing in Coimbatore.

Birth and Education

M. A. Susila was born in Karaikudi, Sivagangai district, on February 27, 1949. Her father is S. Anantharam and her mother is Shobanadevi. She completed her Tamil Medium Higher Class at Meenakshi Girls' High School, Karaikudi. She completed her PUC and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Seethalakshmi Achi College for Women in Pallathur.

M. A. Susila received her master's degree in Tamil from Alagappa College of Arts in Karaikudi, and her PhD in Tamil from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. She joined Madurai Fatima College as a lecturer in the Tamil department in 1970. While working as a college professor and as a part-time researcher, she completed her diploma at Madurai Kamaraj University Evening College and certificate courses in Linguistics, Malayalam, and Sanskrit. M. A. Susila completed 36 years of professorship in the Tamil Department from 1970 to 2006 at Fatima College in Madurai. She also held the vice principal position for two years, from 2002 to 2004.

Private life

M. A. Susila has a daughter, Meenu Pramod.

Literary Life

M. A. Susila’s first short story, Or Uyir Vilai Pogiradhu, was published in 1979. In the same year, she won the first prize in the Amarar Kalki Memorial Short Story Competition held by Kalki Weekly Magazine and was recognized as an introductory writer. Over sixty short stories have been published in various weekly magazines. Many of her stories have been translated into Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, English, and French.

M. A. Susila’s books are included in university and college curriculums. A number of short stories have been published in Kovai Gnani's short story collections. Her short story, Kan Thirandhida Vendum, was adapted as Naan Padikanum for Balumahendra's television series Kadhai Neram. The short story Vittu Viduthalaiyagi is included in Dr. R. Prema's collection of short stories by women writers. During her career as a college lecturer, M. A. Susila served as a research guide for MSc and PhD students.

M. A. Susila served on the thesis and doctorate thesis expert panels and evaluation committees at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, Mother Teresa Women's University, The Gandhigram Rural Institute, and Bharathidasan University in Trichy. M. A. Susila has moderated numerous seminars and presented research issues in national, state, and international seminars and research-workshops organized by the Sahitya Akademi. She credits Kamban, Bharathi, Pudumaipithan, and Jayakanthan as influential literary forerunners.

A seminar was organized on April 7, 2018 by Vishnupuram Literary Circle at the Chennai Russian Cultural Center on M.A. Susila’s translation works.

Political Involvement

During her tenure as a college professor, M. A. Susila was an active member of the Madurai University College Teachers' Association (MUTA) and actively participated in protests.

  • In 2013, Canada's Tamil Literary Garden Award. Three awards for Asadan Translation, including the 2013 Canada Tamil Literary Garden Award

  • G.U. Pope Award given by Tamil Perayam of SRM University
  • In 2018, Dostoevsky’s Tamil Voice award was presented at the appreciation ceremony jointly organized by Vishnupuram Literary Circle and Chennai Russian Cultural Center for M. A. Susila’s contributions to the translation of Russian literature.
  • In 2018 , Amarar Rajam Krishnan Lifetime Memorial Award was given by Manal Veedu Literary Circle
