Lakshmi Saravanakumar (Raja Saravanakumar) (born May 22, 1985) is a Tamil writer whose work spans short stories, novels, and essays. Alongside his literary pursuits, he works in the film industry as an assistant director and dialogue writer. His writing turns its gaze toward lives lived on the margins, probing questions of sexuality and laying bare the violence and cruelties that surround and shape such existences.
Birth and Education
Lakshmi Saravanakumar was born on July 23, 1985, in Thirumangalam, Madurai district, as the only son of Lakshmi. Due to his father being imprisoned for a murder charge, he grew up without parental care and lived in an orphanage until the age of ten. He later completed education up to the eleventh grade. Because of family circumstances, he could not continue his formal schooling.

He writes across multiple forms such as short stories, poetry, essays, and criticism - moving fluidly between genres. Reflecting on his life, he has described writing as his refuge: though personal life has never released him from its bitterness, literature, he says, has been enough to steady him, to give him something to hold on to, for a while.
His first short story collection was Neelanadhi, followed by six more collections. His first novel was Uppu Naaygal. This was followed by novels such as Kaanagan, set against a hunting background in southern Tamil Nadu; Komora, based on the Cambodian civil war; Neelappadam, which portrays the life of a sex worker; and Rooh, which carries Islamic aesthetic influences. His novel Rendaam Aattam depicting the crime background of Madurai city, was published as a serial in Junior Vikatan.
