According to Azhagumalai Kuravanji, Kannan crowned Anangur Kaanimuthaiyan as the head of Kongu Nadu. Oral history records that that Nallathambi Gounder, the son of Muthusamy Gounder settled a boundary dispute amongst the Muvendars (triumvirate of Chera, Chola and Pandya kings who ruled the ancient Tamil territory) at the Chellandi Amman temple in Madukkarai. Muvendars conferred the Mandradi title to Nallathambi Gounder and positioned him as the head of Kannivadi town.
Kannan kulam’s main land is Kannivadi. They also live in the places such as Kalamangalam, Keezhambadi, Kolanalli, Kokkalai, Chithodu, Unjanai, Nasiyanur, Thokkavadi, Mandapathur, Kanchikoil, Maniyanur, Maavurutti, Chithalandur, Kootha Natham, Morur, Nallipalayam, Mozhipalli, Thakadaipadi and Mangalam.
According to the book Kongumandala Sadhagam, Surya Kangeyan was born when Nallathambi crossed Amaravathi river from Ponparapu town and stayed at Nathaikadaiyur. Surya Kangeyan occupied land at Morur and ruled it.
When Muthugounder under the lineage of Surya Kangeyan died, all three of his wives staged Sati (setting themselves on fire). They are worshipped as Deepaindamman Veeramarthi Amman in the temple on Mohanur Road, Namakkal.
