Place in Literary world

Kalaiselvi does not identify herself as a feminist writer. Kalaiselvi believes that the creation does not require gender identity. Kalaiselvi describes herself as writer of moral issues. Kalaiselvi writes about inner world narratives, and has been creating rich fictions with the outside world elements based on historical studies.

Speaking about Kalaiselvi's writings, Pavannan critiques, "Kalaiselvi is an author who continues to produce notable short stories and her stories depict the desire of depth of human mind based on real life experiences. All the incidents depicted in her stories occur in most natural way and give authenticity to the stories. It comes very naturally to Kalaiselvi the form of stories as the perfectly crafted costumes".[1]

Kalaiselvi says Gandhi as her ideal writer. Her stories portray Gandhi as a common man who oscillates between emotions. Thus, enhancing the extraordinary nature of his life. Harilal is an important work in that respect. Kalaiselvi is the one who writes most Tamil stories with Gandhi as the protoganist.
