K. Anandasuppaiyar

K. Anandasuppaiyar was a Tamil scholar, Saiva scholar, and a poet of Eelam Sitrilakiyam (minor literary) world. Anandasuppaiyar's important works include Vannainagar Thaiyalnaayaki Kalivenpa and Vannainagar Thaiyalnaayaki Thiruvoodal collections.
Personal Life
Anandasuppaiyar was born to Ganeshaiyer at Vannarpannai in Jaffna town of Sri Lanka. He had a son by name Aadhinarayanan.
Literary Life
Anandasuppaiyar was educated by Vaitthilinga Chetty. Anandasuppaiyar's father Ganeshaiyar was a direct student of 'Vidhvasiromani' Ponnambala Pillai. so, Anandasuppaiyar also learned from him directly. Due to his devotion to the Goddess Thaiyalnaayaki of Vannainagar, Anandasuppaiyar composed the poems in Kalivenpa and Thiruvoonjal forms as per Sitrrilakiyam norms and kept Goddess Thaiyalnaayaki as their female protagonist.
Goddess Sivakaami's lovequarrel with her husband Lord Shiva is termed as Thiruvoodal. Anandasuppaiyar compiled and released the Thiruvoodal recited on the Thiruvaadhirai (Betelgeuse) star day, one of the 27 stars in Tamil Astrology, of the Tamil month Maargazhi at the Vaitheeswarar temple in Vannaarpanai, Jaffna.
Anandasuppaiyar's Thaiyalnaayaki Thiruvoonjal consists nine hymn verses including the Kaappu (Invocation of deities at the commencement of a poem to facilitate its successful completion). These Thiruvoonjal hymns were composed in Asiriyavirutham (a type of pa – metre: one of two categories of traditional Tamil poems). With musical eloquence, these Thiruvoonjals contain simple terms, philosophical concepts, events experienced by the human being in worldly life, in rituals and in deeds. Anandasuppaiyar had academic legacy. Anandasuppaiyar's grandson Shanmugarathna Iyer compiled some of Anandasuppaiyar's works and published them in 1911.
