Idangazhi Nayanar is one of the Saiva saints of 63 Nayanmars.

Life

Idangazhi Nayanar was the king of the Velir clan at Kodumbalur, the capital of Konadu. Saivism flourished during his reign. A Shiva devotee (Sivanadiyar) used to feed the devotees of Lord Shiva every day there and perform Maheswara Puja. One day, when this Shiva devotee had no food to offer, he became depressed and dared to steal rice paddy at midnight inside the palace of Idangazhi Nayanar. When the Shiva devotee opened the paddy barn and picked up the paddy, he was caught by the night guards. They took him to the king.

Without getting angry, King Idangazhi Nayanar asked him "Why did you steal the paddy?" To this, the devotee replied, "It is my custom to offer food to the devotees of Lord Shiva, as I will be deterred from offering food due to lack of ingredients today, I did this act". On hearing this, Idangazhi Nayanar released him saying, "He is my pandaram (treasurer)".

Thereafter, Idangazhi Nayanar proclaimed that all Shiva devotees are good treasurers and in principle, that all of treasury funds can be used by Shiva devotees. Idangazhi Nayanar offered all the treasury items to the devotees of Lord Shiva.

During Idangazhi Nayanar's time, a channel known as Konkan Channel was dug to divert Cauvery water. Idangazhi Nayanar ruled for the benefit of the people of the country for a long time and attained liberation (Sivanadi - feet of Lord Shiva).
