Tamil Brahmi inscriptions here indicate that this cave site was converted in 2nd second century B.C into a Palli inhabited by Jain sages.

Inscriptions show that people like Kaninathan, Mathirai Pongollan Aathan, Anagan, Madirai Uppuvanigan, Viyakan, Ganathikan, Panida Vanigan, Nedumalan, Koluvanigan, Ilanjanthan, Venpalli Aruvai Vaingan contributed to the founding and operations of this Palli.

Post the Sangam period, about 10th century, Achanandi, a Jain saint made a rock sculpture of Tirthankara in this Palli, as per the vattezhuthu inscription engraved underneath it.
