A. Ramasamy (Born: February 17, 1969) is a media researcher, educator, and a literary, theater, and film critic. He has a post-modernistic outlook.

Birth & Education

A. Ramasamy was born on February 17, 1969, to Alagarsamy and Kondammal in Thatchapatti, a small town about 20 kilometers from Usilampatti in the Madurai district. He completed his primary education at Uthapuram Panchayat Union School, middle education at Elumalai Government Higher Secondary School, Madurai, and his secondary education at Dutley Higher Secondary School, Dindigul. After obtaining his bachelor's degree in Tamil (1977-1980) from The American College, Madurai, he received his master's in Tamil (1980-1982) at the School of Tamil Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University. He earned his doctorate from Madurai Kamaraj University on the theme of society shown in the Nayakar period of Tamil Literature.

Personal Life

After completing his studies at Madurai Kamaraj University, A.Ramasamy worked as a lecturer in the Department of Tamil (1987-1989) of the American College, Madurai, and the Department of Performing Arts (1989-1997), Pondicherry University. At Manonmaniam Sundaranar University he worked in the Department of Tamil, as Associate Professor (1997- 2005), Professor (2005-2015), and retired as Senior Professor (2015-2019). He served as a visiting professor in the Department of Indology, University of Warsaw, Poland for a period of two years (2011-2013) and at the Ministry of Art and Culture, Government of India.

In the field of education, he served as the Head of The Department of Linguistics, Director for Ambedkariyal Centre. He consulted and was in charge of organizations such as the library, the National Service Scheme, publishing, and youth welfare. He served as a member of the curriculum committees of Indian universities and made a series of attempts in creating trends in Tamil literary education, especially for modern Tamil literature, within the university curriculum. He served as an advisor for educational committees of Sri Lankan and Malaysian universities. He retired on June 30, 2019.

A.Ramasamy married Vijayalakshmi on June 30, 1982. He has a daughter, Snehalatha, and a son, Rahulan.

Educational Services

Under the guidance of A. Ramasamy, 15 students have earned Ph.D. degrees and 50 have obtained their M.Phil., degrees. He served as the Head of the Tamil Department, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, librarian, NSS Coordinator, publications coordinator, and Coordinator of Manonmaniam Colleges.

He contributed to the university syllabus for Pondicherry, Madurai, Thiruvalluvar, Thiruvananthapuram, Gandhigramam, Avinashilingam universities, and Tamil Nadu school education department. He also contributed to the New Delhi National Entrance Test, the Civil Services Curriculum, and the Sahitya Akademi award committee.

Theatrical Life

When he was a student of Madurai Kamaraj University, he worked in street plays in association with the left-wing theater movement, the Madurai Real Theater Movement, from 1981 to 1989. He acted in more than 20 street plays for the Real Theater movement. He participated in the plays Thurkira Avalam (in the national drama festival held by Sangeet Natak Academy) and Sabam? Vimochanam! (in the regional festival held by National Natak Academy) produced by that troupe.

A. Ramasamy’s first play was from Sundara Ramasamy’s story "Pallakku Thookigal". Followed by that Pudumaipithan’s "Sirpiyin Naragam" and two stories of Dilip Kumar were staged. Gnana Rajasekaran’s "Vayiru, Prapanchan’s Agalya" and Ravikumar’s "Vaarthai Mirugam" were staged. He became the teacher of the Sankaradas Swamigal School of Performing Arts started in Pondicherry and taught dramaturgy to the students. He wrote plays, dramaturgical commentary essays, and critical articles. Nadakangal Vivathangal, Othigai, Pathu Kurunadakangal, Munmedai, Thodarum Othikaigal, T.D.Sankaradas Swamigal - Vaazhvum, Nadaka Muraimayum are drama-related books written by A.Ramasamy. From 1992 to 1997, he contributed as the organizer of the Puduvai Kootukkural Nataka Amaippu.
