Uyiroviyam (1942) is a novel written by Narana Duraikannan. The novel talks about pure love without the need for physical needs.
Writing, Publication
The debates created by novel Yaan En Pennaga Piranthen led Narana Duraikanna to write this novel. Uyiroviyam presents a complete opposite view which is Pure Love without Physical desire. This novel came with the preface of V. Ramasamy Iyengar.
Synopsis
Tamil Teacher Natarajan falls in love with Karpagam, a student. Karpagam gets married to another man due to the intrigues of Mangalaambal who falls in love with him. Natarajan only gets the letter by Karpagam at a later time. Natarajan meets Karpam. As they talk in the private room, Natarajan tells his great love for her and asks her to give him a kiss as a remembrance of love. Karpagam says she has the same love for him but explains her body does not belong to her. Natarajan goes, taking her image as 'Uyiroviyam', (lively image of Karpagam). Her husband Chandrasekaran, who hears it secretly, realizes the truth and decides that Karpagam and he can live in the same house without the need for any physical contact (like siblings). All three of them live with Love on their hearts without any expectations of physical desires.
Literary Assessment
This is a novel that shows the debates of the period when the traditional feudal sexual morals in Tamil were different from the morals based on the feelings of individuals. Another extension of this novel is Akilan's 'Chithirapavai'. Many novelists of that time, including M. Varadarasanar and Na. Parthasarathy, have created novels like Kurinjimalar with the aim of expressing pure love without the body. It also resembles the novels of Kantekar translated by Ka.Sree.Sree.
It is a novel written in a Traditional Tamil style, with artificial occasions, without imitation of practical life and without nuances. But the period of publication was very popular and saw many editions. The love letters and dialogues in it were quoted by many of those times. This novel is a study to know the evolution of social relations.
The plot of this novel has a close resemblance with the plot of the Chithirapavai novel written by Akilan which was later awarded the Gnanapeedam.
