Urupasi (2005) is a novel written by S. Ramakrishnan. Through the character Sampath, it tells the downfall of an intellectual in the Tamil context.

Writing, Publication

Urupasi is S. Ramakrishnan's third novel. In 2005 it was published by Uyirmai Publishing House.

Synopsis

Urubasi is written in a structure that gives a picture of Sampath's life after his death through different angles about him. The novel begins with three friends embarking on a journey with memories of Sampath after Sampath's death. None of them had a balanced relationship with Sampath. One assumes that Sampath has a close relationship with another. Their relationship to Sampath is told through memories and conversations.

Sampath is introduced as more infatuated with matches and fire. He has a strange free spirit. A person who keeps himself alone. He is not interested in working and earning. Different images are conjured up as someone who doesn't follow social norms in his habits with friends. Women associated with the life of Sampath come as characters of Yazhini and Jayanthi. The novel begins and ends with Sampath's death.

Literature Place

Urupasi is the life of a person who is ruined because of his intuition and quest for knowledge cannot fit in with the society. Presented from the point of view of friends who cannot understand or know how to approach him. Jeyamohan quotes "It is human misery that has been told so many times. But because of its incredible reliability, it becomes so close that it takes us into a variety of thoughtful loops" while assessing the novel.
