Stella Bruce

Stella Bruce (Ram Mohan) (August 08, 1941 - March 1, 2008) wrote leisure stories in Tamil. He was loved for his soft love stories. Under the pen name Kalidas, Stella Bruce wrote poems in literary magazines. Stella Bruce worked in cinema industry. He was interested in philosophies of J.Krishnamurti and Mother Pondichery

Stella Bruce was born on August 08,1941 in Virudhunagar. His family was in business and trade and wealthy. Stella Bruce's father was a friend of Kamarajar. Stella Bruce parted his family business and relocated to Chennai to be in cinema industry. He was involved in movie discussions. But no movies were made in Stella Bruce's name.

Personal Life

Stella Bruce had a TVS Agency(dealership) in Virudhunagar. After relocation, he lived alone in Chennai. Stella Bruce married Hemambujam, a 32 year old fan on January 18, 1987. Stella Bruce was 48 then. They had no children. Stella Bruce loved to read and listening to music.

Death

Stella Bruce's wife Hema died in July 2007 due to kidney failure. Few months later Stella Bruce committed suicide on March 01, 2008. He was 67 years old then.

The below was from Stella Bruce's last note. The life that I and Hema had was wonderful, spiritual and epic. My death would make my mom sad. What to do? I could not bear. Loneliness crushes me. So I am opening the doors of the death and going to Hema. When your lonely life becomes a punishment, death becomes freedom. I bid farewell.

When Athmanaam passed away, Stella Bruce wrote, "The soul of person who dies of suicide, violence or accident have to struggle a lot in certain plains. They are unbearably cruel". After 24 years Athmanaam died, Stella Bruce committed suicide.

Literature Life

Stella Bruce got the reading habit from his father in his childhood. His first story published in Gnana Ratham in 1970 where Jeyakanthan was the editor. Stella Bruce wrote poems as Kalidas. Many poems were published in Zha, a magazine started by Athmanaam. Stella Bruce was the name of his friend's sister who had intellectual disability. He chose the name in her memory. Stella Bruce wrote his first story titled Oliver in Dinamani Kathir as Stella Bruce. After writing few love stories in Kumudam, he wrote "Oru muraidhan pookum", a serial in Anandavikatan in 1984. The story, Adhu oru kanakalam was very famous. The series of articles Stella Bruce wrote in Virutcham literary magazine, "En Nanbar Athmanaam" (My friend Athmanaam) were the last.
