Ra. Senthilkumar writes short stories and essays in Tamil. Living in Japan, Ra. Senthilkumar uses the novel setting and the friction between differing cultural milieus in his stories. Some of his stories, set in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu, give a brilliant picture of the downfall of landlords of yesteryears.

Birth, Education

Ra. Senthilkumar was born on July 23, 1976 at Mannargudi, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu to P. S. Ramalungam and Rethna. His schooling was at National Higher Secondary School, Mannargudi. He earned his bachelor's degree in Computer Science from A.V.V.M. Sri Pushpam College, Poondi and masters degree from Bharathidasan University, Trichy.

Personal Life

Ra. Senthilkumar married Gayathri in 2004 and has two children Kavin and Kavya. He is a software professional working in Japan. During his college days, he was an active member in the Communist Party of India and then the Dravidian parties of Tamil Nadu.

Through " Muzhumathi Trust", Ra. Senthilkumar is helping the students of Tamil Nadu as well as Srilankan Tamil students to continue their education. He is also involved in adopting the government schools in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu to improve its quality of education and to make them as " model schools".

Literary Life

Ra. Senthilkumar's first story was published in the childrens' magazine "Gokulam" when he was a student. He was also circulating the handwritten magazine "chittukuruvi" (sparrow) when he was in school. Ra. Senthilkumar considers the writers Jayakanthan, Thi. Janakiraman, Sundara Ramaswamy, Jeyamohan, Vannadasan and Leo Tolstoy as the influencers in his writing. He has invited the tamil writers S. Ramakrishnan, Nanjil Nadan, Jeyamohan and Leena Manimekalai to Japan for a literary congregation.

Ra. Senthilkumar's first short story collection "Isumiyin narumanam" (fragrance of Isumi) was published in the year 2021. Out of the twelve stories in this collection, eight were written in the backdrop of Japan. These stories have a kalaidascopic view of day today life, office culture, family, life in a big city and also the characteristics of people of Japan.

Literary View

Most of Ra. Senthilkumar's stories have Japanese background. He examines Tamil life with symbols derived from Japanese culture and lifestyle. Hence, Ra. Senthilkumar's literary work is an important contribution to the Diaspora literature of Tamil, especially in the era of globalisation. According to critic M. Gopalakrishnan, Tamil writers of the next generation are bringing the best out of their foreign culture to their homeland and Ra. Senthilkumar's "Isumiyin Narumanam" is an important addition to the list.
