Prabandha Deepam

Prabandha Deepam (19th century CE) is a Paatiyal text, written much later, that details the grammar of Sitrilakyam. Paatiyal texts are those that talk about Sitrilakyam's grammar.

Author

The author's name is not known. Some verses from the text Muthuveeriyam appear in Prabandha Deepam and so it can be concluded that this text was written after Muthuveeriyam. Dr. Sa.Ve. Subramanian, who published the text, mentions that it was written in the 19th century.

Structure of the text

Prabandha Deepam contains 96 verses about the grammar of the 96 genres of Sitrilakiyam. It is an unfinished text as it ends with the term 'Apoorthi' (unfinished).

Content

Veeramamunivar's Chathur Agaraadhi details about the 96 sitrilakyam genres. Parani and Uzhathipaatu, which are talked about in Chathur Agarathy, do not find mention in Prabandha Deepam. Instead the genres Cheetukavi and Samuthi are explained. Chathur Agaraadhi's classification of Perungaapiyam (larger epic poetry) and Sirukaapiyam (smaller epic poetry) is not featured in this text. It is simply classified as Kaapiyam (epic poetry). The classification of Thogai from the Chathur Agaraadhi is further classified as Kalithogai, Nedunthogai, Kurunthogai in Prabandha Deepam. The author mentions Kurathipaatu but not Uzhathipaatu.
