Parangusa Dasar was born in the year 1828 ( Tamil year - Sarvadhari and Month - Aipasi). He was born in Saiva Velalar community. His father's name was Parakalar. His original name is not known.

He was married to Vedavalli and had one son Alavandan. He considered Athidangi Venkatachariyar of Triplicane as his guru. His guru offered him the name Parangusa Dasar which he used for rest of his life.

His keerthanas were published multiple times under the name of Hari Bhajana Keerthanas. First publication had a compilation of thirty one (31) keerthanas and later sixty nine (69) additional keerthanas were for subsequent republishing with one hundred keerthanas. Many of them are written in a style to convey them to one's mind. One of them is "Rama Namathai Sol Maname" set to Nadanamakriya ragam and triputa talam.
