Kalki is a weekly magazine found by writer Kalki in the year of 1941 and has been running ever since. Kalki is one of the most important entertainment magazines in Tamil. Writer Kalki's famous novels Sivagamiyin Sabatham and Ponniyin Selvan were published in Kalki magazine.
Magazine's History
Kalki was found by writer Kalki on 1941. Writer Kalki has been the co-editor and editor-in-chief of Anandavikatan Weekly since 1931. Anandavikatan's chief S.S. Vasan had refused to take Kalki back in, fearing Government consequences, for his participation in Quit India Movement on 1941. With the help of his political mentor Rajaji, writer Kalki started the Kalki magazine. Kalki's friendship with Sathasivam blossomed when participating in Salt Satyagraha Movement on 1930 and eventually he joined Kalki magazine as an administrator. Sathasivam's wife M.S. Subbulakshmi starred in the film Savitri and donated the salary from the movie to start the magazine. D.K. Chithambaranatha Muthaliyar, a friend of Rajaji and Kalki also collaborated for Kalki magazine.
The Kalki office was set up on the Gandhi-Irwin road, opposite the Egmore railway station. Writer Kalki had mentioned about the magazine's policies in the first issue. It was portrayed as a conversation between Lord Vinayaka and writer Kalki, having Lord Vinayaka asking Kalki about the magazines policy, in which Kalki clarified by saying 'first National Interest, second National Interest and third National Interest.
Writer Kalki died on September 9, 1954 and the magazine had Kalki's student and friend Writer M.P. Somu as its editor, afterwards D. Sathasivam held the position for a year. The New Year edition on 1965, had writer Kalki had stressed the interegrity of the press should be to towards the interst of the people, rather than pleasing them and eventually making them understand it. Kalki's son writer Rajendran had assumed the responsibilities of editor of the magazine in 1970.
Kalki was suspended in 1977 due to administrative problems and the workers' strike, eventually re starting it in a new building on 1978. In 1993, Rajendran's eldest daughter Sita Ravi had became the editor of Kalki magazine. Since September 2021, the Kalki Group has acquired all of the magazine's repository licenses. The magazine is being published as an e-magazine at www.kalkionline.com by Lakshmi Natarajan and his team. V. Ramanan is the Editor-in-Chief of the e-magazine.
