Henry Martin (1811- March 31,1861) was a pioneer educator and journalist in Yazhpanam. He was associated with Vattukottai seminary (gurumadam). He was a scholar in English and Tamil

Birth and Education

Henry Martin was born on 1811 in Sundikuli, Yazhpanam. He attended American Mission primary school at Thellipazhai. He continued the education at Vattukottai seminary.

Personal Life

Henry Martin joined as a teacher in Vattukottai seminary. He worked as the editor of Udhayatharagai, the first Tamil magazine in Sri Lanka as well as the first newspaper in Yazhpanam. He worked as the editor for the English division.

He left Vattukottai seminary in 1843 and joined a government job as manager of treasury. Also he served as a translator in judicial cases. He went to Chennai to buy a printing machine in 1861. He died soon after he got back from his trip.
