Azhiyakolam (1965) is a novel written by R. Shanmugasundaram. This story happens in the same backdrop of novel Nagammal in a place called Vengamedu. It is a village love story.

Azhiyakolam novel was written by R. Shanmugasundaram in 1965. It was published by Puthumalar Publications, ran by R. Shanmugasundaram.

Synopsis

Duraisamy, a college graduate, dates Nirmala, both are in love but do not show it. The people of Vengamedu who come to visit Mutthaya at Rakkiyapakka Gounder's house get angry because she is not there and come to Kaliyappa Gounder house. There they see his daughter Nirmala and the marriage is confirmed. Nirmala expresses her love and asks Duraisamy to ask her father for her. But the Kaliyappa Gounder did not agree. Duraisamy sees Mutthaya in the farm field and falls in love with her. Knowing about Nirmala's love, Mutthaya commits suicide. On hearing this news, Nirmala's family says they don't want Nirmala. They convince them and the marriage happens. Duraisamy leaves the town.

Literary Significance

The same Kongu Nadu village environment depicted in the Nagammal novel is realistically presented in this novel as well. The novel tells us about the problems that arise in relationships when young people develop an environment of self-determination through education.
