He completed his primary education at Uthapuram Panchayat Union School, middle education at Elumalai Government Higher Secondary School, Madurai and secondary education at Dutley Higher Secondary School, Dindigul. After completing his Bachelor's degree in Tamil (1977-1980) from The American College, Madurai, he studied Master's in Tamil (1980-1982) at the School of Tamil Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University.
