Kasiyaban (B. Kulathu Iyer) (1919-2004) was a Tamil writer who wrote poems and a novel called Asadu. A writer hailed from the literary group in Thiruvananthapuram.
Birth, Education
Kasiyaban was born in 1919 in Thiruvananthapuram. Studied BA in Philosophy. He studied Tamil as a second language at Kerala University. Worked in Life Insurance Corporation. He was very good in Malayalam because of the primary education in Kerala. Also proficient in both North Indian Language and English. He studied international literature deeply including Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Mouni and K.N. Subramaniam were the two of his favourite tamil writers.
Literary Place
Kulathu Iyer, nicknamed Kasiyaban, started writing at the age of 53. His Muhammad stories were published in Kanaiyazhi and received wide readership. A pioneering literary endeavor is the appearance and disappearance of a particular character, Muhammad, in various stories. His first novel is Asadu.
Kasiyaban's novel Asadu was published in 1978. Fifteen years later, its reprint was published in 1994 by Virutcham Publishing House. Nakulan wrote the preface for this.
Kasiyaban adopted an aesthetic style of understatement. He tried to convey emotions or scenes as succinctly as possible. Sundara Ramasamy mentions that his Asadu is one of the best novels in Tamil. 'Kasiyaban's specialty is the subtle ironic tone he creates in his writing, which is wonderful," notes author S. Ramakrishnan.[1]
