A. Vennila (August 10, 1971) is a novelist, short story writer, poet, publisher and editor of a literary magazine. She has edited anthologies of history, and been a publisher of historical works. She was motivated by her interest in Dravidian ideology. She serves as an ssistant editor at the TamilNadu government archives.
Birth, Education
A. Vennila was born as the only daughter of C. Ambalavanan and Vasantha from Ammayapattu village near Vandavasi, Tiruvannamalai district. She was born on August 10, 1971.
A. Vennila did her primary schooling at Ammayapattu Panchayat Union's school. She completed her schooling and Teacher Training graduation at the Government Girls High School, Vandavasi. After doing her post graduation in Psychology and Mathematics, she completed her research and doctorate in the topic Devadaasigalin kalaithiranum aalumayum (The artistry and personality of Devadasis).
Personal Life
A. Vennila married M. Murugesh on April 5, 1998. Murugesh is a writer of children's literature in Tamil. The couple have three children - M.V Kavinmozhi, M.V. Anbubharathi, M.V. Nilabharathi. She currently works as an Assistant Editor at the Tamilnadu government Archives.
Literary Career
A. Vennila writes novels, short stories, and poetry. She cites Thi. Janakiraman, Gandharvan, Prapanchan as her major literary influences.
Poetry
In 1997, A. Vennila published her first poem Adutha aandum vasantham in the magazine Ananda Vikatan
Short Stories
A. Vennila's first short story collection Pattu poochigalai tholaitha oru pozhudhil was published in 2005 by Madhinilayam Publications.
Novels
A. Vennila wrote the novel Gangapuram based on the lives of Rajaraja Cholan and Rajendra Cholan. Her second novel Salampuri describes the emotions and family problems of grassroots workers of the Dravidian movement.
Her novel Neeradhikaram is a fictional account of British engineer Penniquik who built the Mullaperiyar dam. It has been considered as one of the significant historical novels in Tamil, and was translated by S. Mohankumar into Malayalam.
Anthology
In 2014, A. Vennila edited and compiled a selected set of short stories by important Tamil women writers during the period 1930 to 2014, titled Meedhamirukkum sorkkal.
For her novel Neeradhikaram, A. Vennila had conducted detailed background research at Tamil Nadu Archives, Delhi National Archives, British Library in London and Thiruvananthapuram Kerala Archives. She digitized and uploaded nearly thirty thousand pages of the compiled documents online to document archives at Tamilnadu Virtual University and Roja Muthiah Research Library.
Historical Research
A. Vennila researched about the Battle of Wandiwash between British and French colonial foreces, and wrote an account of it titledVandavasi Por- 250[1] jointly with Dr. M. Rajendran.
A. Vennila was the editor of two major historical series - Indhiya Sarithira Kalanjiyam[2], an 8-volume historical encyclopedia by P. Sivanadi, and Anandarangam Pillai Dinappadi Seithi Kurippu, a 12-volume publication of the famous Diaries of Ananda Ranga Pillai.
Journalism
A. Vennila served on editorial boards at the magazines Kadhai solli and Puththagam Pesudhu.
Film
A. Vennila worked as the scriptwriter and assistant director for a Tamil movie named Sakunthalavin kaadhalan. She has also written song lyrics for two movies.
Literary Significance
A. Vennilas works of fiction and essays reflect her leftist and feminist perspectives. Her novels approach history with a Marxist and feminist lens. She has carved out a space for herself through works that describe the place of common folk in history and the internal world of women.
Tamil writer Imayam described her work as 'Truth as it is. She subtly highlights the issues that should embarass the Tamil Society. Everything is approached and criticised from a practical and pragmatic outlook, without any feministic sloganeering or clichés." [3]
