Literary life
A. Muttulingam's first short story ‘Kadaisi Kaingariyam’ was published in 1958 in the issue of ‘Suthanthiram’ magazine. Prof. Kailasapathy introduced modern Tamil writer like Pudumaipithan to Muttulingam. He was encouraged to write after taking part in discussions between Professors K. Sivathambi and K. Kailasapathy. In 1964, a collection of short stories titled 'Akka' was published with the preface of Prof. K. Kailasapathy. It featured the first prize-winning short shory - ‘akka’ in Dinakaran (Sri Lanka) magazine.
After a long hiatus, he continued his work in 1995 with the publication of a collection of short stories, ‘Thigadachakram’. Since then, many short story collections and articles have been published.
He has been instrumental in the organization named Tamil Ilakkiya Thottam, established in 2001 in Canada to recognize the great eminents living around the world and to promote the Tamil language.
He collabrated with Dr. Vijay Janagraman and others for fundraising in 2018 from the Tamils around the world for concerted effort to establish a Tamil seat at Harvard University in the United States. A. Muttulingam has written an article on these experiences under the title ‘Kaalai Thoduven’ (I will touch the feet).
Literary Works
A. Muttulingam wrote interesting stories with a focus that his writings should reach a reader. He is considered as a descendent of Ki. Rajanarayanan and Ashokamithran in Tamil literary world.
A. Muttulingam's writing transcends territorial boundaries. With a global vision and cultural identity, his stories approaches the problems of immigrants, their cultural affinities and aversions. He does not end up with a satirical or a judgemental note. Above all he has no pride in his cultural background. Stories of Muttulingam presents many cultural backgrounds. It shakes the fundamentals of life that the people, land and their culture have built within us.
The experiences and cultural aspects encountered by the mind in an unfamiliar environments will always try to acquaint them with its own cultural background. In such a standardisation there always seems to be a disdain for Western concepts and cultures. Muttulingam stops short without giving any space to such general intentions and forethought.
With selected words and its excellent form, the fictional world of Muttulingam, is pervasive. A. Muttulingam's works that tell the new as new are much loved by writers and readers.
Naturally occurring elegance and reproach are the hallmarks of his work. Writer Jeyamohan has written extensively on him under the topic ‘Punnagaikkum Kathaisolli’ (Smiling Storyteller).
His interviews with Indian and foreign writers and celebrities are gifts to Tamil.
The works of A. Muttulingam that change difficult feelings into simple parables are special. A. Muttulingam is also authors essays with ‘a twist of fiction’. In his works there are places where the myths are approached with a modern view. When messages are conveyed, literary messages and quotations are constantly integrated into them, most naturally without distraction or artificiality.
The works of A. Muttulingam combine simplicity, depth and density.
Solvanam Internet Magazine in February 2017 came out as a A. Muttulingam special edition.
Gyanam Magazine April 2018 has published a special issue titled ‘Ezhuthulagil A.Muttulingam 60’.
A. Muttulingam insists on the idea that a language that does not have its own country will perish. He also believes that overuse of vernacular words can lead to a lack of understanding by readers.
He says that the fictional problems that are lost while being a story teller can be illustrated through the mental flows of the characters, even if they have difficulty.
A. Muttulingam was criticised by a few that the tragedies of Eelam War were not dealt beyond a limit in his works. For which he denied by replying , “I have gone only to the limit where I should go. A writer's work should be judged by what he writes. Not keeping what is not written.”
