Kalaiselvi was born as the daughter to the couple L. Subramanian and S. Rajeshwari in Neyveli in 1972. Her father worked as a senior officer in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. Kalaiselvi finished her schooling at NLC Girls Higher Secondary School, Neyveli and obtained her Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Annamalai University, Chidambaram.

Speaking about Kalaiselvi's writings, Pavannan critiques, "Kalaiselvi is an author who continues to produce notable short stories and her stories depict the desire of depth of human mind based on real life experiences. All the incidents depicted in her stories occur in most natural way and give authenticity to the stories. It comes very naturally to Kalaiselvi the form of stories as the perfectly crafted costumes”.[1]
