வெரியர் எல்வின்

இந்தியப்பழங்குடியினரை ஆராய்ச்சி செய்யவந்தவர். இந்தியப் பழங்குடிக்கொள்கையை வடிவமைப்பவராக ஆனார். இந்தியாவுக்கு ஒரு பார்வையாளராக வந்த எல்வின் இங்கேயே தங்கிவிட்டார். காந்தியிடமிருந்து ஆதர்சத்தைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டார். பழங்குடிகளை கிறிஸ்தவராக மாற்ற அவர் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை என்பதனால் கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்திலிருந்து வெளியேற்றப்பட்டார். பழங்குடிகளை இன்னொருவராக ஆக்குவதை எல்லாவகையிலும் அவர் எதிர்த்தார், அதுவே அடிப்படையில் எல்வின் கொள்கை

ஒரு குறிப்பில் பழங்குடிகளின் வாழ்விலுள்ள கொண்டாட்டங்களை இல்லாமலாக்கிவிட்டால் அவர்கள் அழிந்துவிடுவார்கள் என்கிறார் எல்வின். ‘நாகரீக’ மக்களின் கடும் உழைப்பு, சேமிப்பு, கல்வி ஆகியவை அவர்களுக்குச் சுமைகள் என்கிறார்.
