Ulagam Kulanthaiyaga Irunthabothu is a Tamil adaptation of the English book 'When the World was Young' by anthropologist Verrier Elwin (1996). It is a collection of various legends of Indian tribes.

Publication

The English version of the book was published in 1961 by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. It was reprinted in 1966 and after a long gap came out again in 1995 with a foreword by historian Ramachandra Guha for the next generation of readers. Brigitta Jayaseelan translated the Tamil version published by the National Book Trust, India in 1996.

This book, which is a handbook for storytellers, continues to see reprints.

Ulagam Kulanthaiyaga Irunthabothu is a 90-page mini-book on the myths of the Indian tribal people and the folk oral discourses about nature that prevailed among them in 38 stories under 6 headings.

How did the paddy grow? Why birds chirp? Verrier Elwin has compiled their beliefs from various backgrounds and beliefs into stories.
