S.J. Sivashankar (Born: December 7, 1976) is a novelist, researcher, translator, and literary activist. He served as the treasurer of the Kalai Ilakiya Perumandram (Council for Art and Literature), a left-wing literary organization. He has translated works such as the "Ambedkar Letters". He is also involved in the cultural research of Kanyakumari district.

Birth & Education

S.J. Sivashankar was born on December 7, 1976 in Neyur, Kanyakumari district. His father was V.S. Jyothiraj, who hailed from Manchanavilai, Kalkurichi, Kanyakumari District, and mother, I. Bhakyam Isaac, from Vazhramaanikam next to Pudukottai. Jyothiraj worked as a district health supervisor in the Tamil Nadu Government Health Department. Bhakyam worked as a village nurse in the Tamil Nadu Government Health Department.

S.J. Sivashankar did his nursery schooling at Amala Convent, Thuckalay, KanyaKumari district. He completed class two to class five at Manalikarai Carmel Primary School and from class six to class twelve at Government High School, Thuckalay.

The sudden death of his father after finishing his schooling hindered his education. He completed one year medical laboratory training in a private institute in Kozhiporvilai. Due to family circumstances he couldn’t resume his studies for 3 years and then joined a BSC. Pharmacist degree program by clearing the entrance exam. He attended Vivekananda College, Elayambalayam, Tiruchengode for the first two years and Fatima College, Thenkasi, Kadayanallur for the remaining two years.

Personal Life

S.J. Sivashankar's wife, V. Ezhilarasi, holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. They have two children, E.S. Rakesh Nandan and E.S. Vishwa Nandan. S.J. Sivashankar lives in Thuckalay, Kanyakumari District.

Organizational Activities

Being a leftist, S.J. Sivashankar joined the Kalai Ilakiya Perumandram (Council for Art and Literature) and worked as treasurer for the Kanyakumari district branch for 10 years.

Literary Works

In 1994, S.J. Sivashankar took an interest in poetry towards the end of his schooling and started writing poems under the pen name “Shivadha” in small magazines published at the time. He was introduced to literature in 2005 through Pudhiya Kaatru, a magazine published in Madurai. He wrote poems, film reviews, and book reviews. His works were regularly published in small magazines. His first short story was published in 2007 and his first collection of short stories was published in 2012.

S.J. Sivashankar took part in various speeches and national level seminars on principles of literature, film reviews, fiction, and translation. Related articles have also been published.

Research Works

As a member of the Sembavalam Research Circle, which is in the responsibility of Sculpture Researcher Senthi Natarajan and Folklore Researcher A.K.Perumal, S.J. Sivashankar has travelled with them all over Tamil Nadu to research and study stone inscriptions, sculptures, archeological sites, and Jain sites including Enperungundram of Madurai. He couldn’t continue with direct field research post cardiac arrest.

S.J. Sivashankar is currently working on the research study of Kumari Kalkulam vernacular vocabulary, Kanyakumari district’s adages, dialects, cultural norms, folk stories, and the origin of sentence structure in Tamil under the guidance of linguistic scholar K. Rasaraman.

S.J. Sivashankar is a leftist writer. He is involved in Dalit literary activities. He is also involved in the study of fiction, translation, and short films along with regional cultural studies.
