Ravuthar Sahib’s grandfather Sayid Ali Ul Madani migrated to Madurai from Arab, preached Islam and worked as an Islamic Judge. Ravuthar Sahib’s father Sayid Asees Sherkhan was an army commander. Ravuthar Sahib’s original name was Sayid Mohamad.

Sherkhan trusted his son and daughter to a textile trader in Madurai, went for the war and died. His cemetery is in Cudalore. Like his father, Sayid Muhamad also worked in the army and got the title, Killedar Hassin. After the war he returned to Madurai and could not locate his younger sister and adapted daughter. He went to Thondi and to Kottaipattinam, where he started living in a hut near the Mosque. He sold his horse and started selling salted dry fish (''Uppukaruvadu''). Since then he has been known as Ravuthar.

Her sister Shaikkammal was suffering from a kind of leprosy many years and Ravuthar healed her disease by giving her the water infused with blessing. Mappi Lebbai Maraikayar married Shaikkammal to Ravuthar and the couple got two children from the marriage. When a complaint came about the mistakes in Rauthar’s Koran recitation, a couple of Islamic scholars (''Alims'') arrived for testing. They reported the mistakes in the Koran Recitation of Ravuthar and went to a pond for a bathe. When they got out of the pond they found a tiger with a wide-open mouth, in the bank. The tiger displayed obeisance for Ravuthar and obeyed his order to leave for the forest.  He described to the Alims, “ I ordered the tiger with a single line from Koran. You notice only the letters of Koran and I know the truth of Koran. Koran words become the commands of God when alive in my tongue and all the living beings obey those words”

Death

He died at Kottaipattinam during the Hijri 1083, Sabar 15th (CE 1613). Every year Kandoori festival is celebrated on the 15th of Sabar.
