Paavannan (P. Bhaskaran)(October 20, 1958), is a Tamil author who has made significant contributions to fiction, literary criticism, and children's literature. Furthermore, he actively participates in translations from Kannada to Tamil. He depicted the geographical area around Cuddalore and Pondicherry in a direct and realistic style. He has been recognized for his substantial contributions to the rise of the Tamil Dalit literary movement by translating Dalit literature from Kannada to Tamil.

Birth, Education

Paavannan

Paavannan was born on October 20, 1958, to Balaraman and Sakundala in Valavanur, Villupuram district. He completed his primary schooling at Valavanur Panchayat Primary School. Subsequently, he pursued his education at Kovindaiyar School and Government Boys Higher Secondary School. His pre-university studies were completed at Anna Arts College in Villupuram, and he received his Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Tagore Arts College in Puducherry. Personal Life

On August 22nd, 1987, he married Amuda. They had a son, Amrita Mayan Karki. Paavannan’s first job was as an employee of the Indian Postal Department. In 2018, he retired from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as Assistant Divisional Engineer in Karnataka State.

Literary Life

In 1982, Paavannan's first short story "Pazhudhu" was published in Deepam magazine. In 1986, his short story "Mul" won the Ilakiya Sinthanai Award and garnered him attention from the literary world. In 1987, Paavannan's first collection of short stories, "Vergal Tholaivil Irukinrana," was published by Kavita Publishing House. When Raj Gautaman published his foreword to the book in the Kalachuvadu magazine, it gained literary significance.

Paavannan cites Ku. Alagirisamy, Maxim Karki, Jayakanthan, and Vanandasan as the pioneers who impacted his literary work.

Novels

Paavannan’s debut novel was titled "Vazhlkai Oru Visaranai". He continued to write other novels, such as "Sitharalgal" and "Paimarakappal". In all three novels, Paavannan uses realism as a technique to capture life in Cuddalore and Puducherry.

Children’s Literature

Paavannan was inspired by M.L.Thangappa when he was young and began writing children's songs like him. It took a while, but in 1997, his first collection of children's songs (Kuzhanthaiyai pin thodarum kaalam, Vidiyal Publishing House) was published.

Literature Criticism

Paavannan used the literary criticism technique of “New Criticism” when undertaking literary analysis and producing articles based on his research outcomes. His work on the hundred best short stories of Tamil, titled "Enakku Piditha Kathaigal" stands out among them. He has written more than thirty books on literary criticism.

Translation

Paavannan has undertaken translation work in both Kannada and English languages. His translations from English primarily encompass literature in topics surrounding nature and biographies. Paavanan’s translations from Kannada hold great significance in Tamil literature. They exist in three distinct types.

Novels

Paavannan translated novels from Kannada, including "Paruvam" by S.L. Bhairappa and "Ther" by Raghavendra Patil. His translation of “Paurvam” is regarded as one of Tamil literature's best works.

Dailt Literature

Paavannan established the foundation for the advancement of Dalit writing in the Tamil language through his translations of works such as S. Sitthalingaiah's memoir "Oorum, Cheriyum" and several other Kannada Dalit short stories.

Dramas

Paavannan translated dramas from Kannada such as “Maduraikandam” by HS Sivaprakash and “Nagamandalam” and “Balipeedam” by Girish Karnath.

Literary Place

Paavannan, a well-known writer of the post-1980s era, was vital in bringing direct and realistic style to Tamil writing and opening up previously unexplored regions of existence. Through his works, the language and people of the Pondicherry-Cuddalore region were featured in literature. He facilitated the incorporation of Kannada literature into the Tamil literary canon by means of translation. The Kannada translations of Dalit literature by Paavannan significantly contributed to the advancement of Dalit literature in the Tamil language.
