Ootrumalai Iruthaalaya Maruthappa Devar (Common Era 19th Century) was the Ootrumalai Jamin and someone who supported Tamil Poets.

Life Note

Ootrumalai Jamin belongs to Veerakeralampudur near Tirunelveli, Tenkasi District. The Palayakarargal who ruled the Tirunelveli Seemai all belonged to the Maravar tribe and came from the “Kiluvai” country in the Ramanathapuram area. The Jamindars of Ootrumalai belonged to the Kondayankottai section of the Maravar race. Among the 72 Palayams divided during the reign of King Vishwanatha Nayakar of Madurai, Ootrumalai is the largest. There were 148 villages under its jurisdiction. At one point of time the Suranthai Jamin was also auctioned by the Ootrumalai Jamindar and brought under his rule. The Jamindar of Ootrumalai had the title of Vijayagunarama Pandian. He is the bearer of Upaya Samaram, Tiger Flag, Magarakkodi and Indra's Flag of Valari.

Their family deity is Navaneetha Kritina Perumal. Iruthaalaya Maruthappa Devar was their famious Jamin of Ootrumalai (The name of the Lord of Veerakeralampudur temple is Irudayalayar). During his time there were Chennikulam Annamalai Reddiyar who sang Kavadichindu and Vannacharapam Dhandapani Swamigal. Annamalai Reddiyar was the assembly poet.

Ootrumalai Iruthaalaya Maruthappa Devar supported many poets and provided them with food and shelter. He encouraged Thandapani Swamigal to sing Navaneethakritina Kalambakam and Annamalai Reddiyar to sing Kavadichindu. He listened to poets' songs and gave donations. They compiled the songs sung on Iruthaalaya Maruthappa Devar in a book called "Ootrumalai Thanipadal Thirattu". He had the ability to understand the meaning of the songs even though the meaning was not visible (Thirisorkalai Amaithu Madakku Muthaliaya Sollanigal Irunthaalum).
