Hilda Polard (Dr.Hilda Magaret Polard) (1883-1944) was a doctor in London Missionary society. She rendered free services when plague struck Erode. She is remembered as Polardamma.

Life

Hilda Polard was born on June 20, 1883 in London. After graduation in medicine, she came to India. She joined Arcot missionary as a doctor from 1913 to 1917 along with Ida Scudder.  In 1917 A.W.Prep brought her to Erode to prevent the spread of contagious plague. She worked on London missionary hospital in Erode from 1917 to 1944. She is remembered as Polardamma for the rare services she rendered during the plague. She is referred under many names such as Polardamma, Poladamma and Polamma in folk songs around Erode.
