Hilda Polard was born on June 20, 1883 in London. After graduation in medicine, she came to India. She joined Arcot missionary as a doctor from 1913 to 1917 along with Ida Scudder.  In 1917 [[ஏ.டபிள்யூ.பிரப்|A.W.Brough]] brought her to Erode to prevent the spread of contagious plague. She worked on London missionary hospital in Erode from 1917 to 1944. She is remembered as Polardamma for the services she rendered during the plague. She is referred under many names such as Polardamma, Poladamma and Polamma in folk songs around Erode.
