காந்தி

Gandhi (1931) was a Political - Literary magazine that came out in Tamil by T. S. Chokkalingam. It primarily published news on freedom struggle and contained literary works in addition.

Publication

Gandhi magazine was issued twice in a week based on Chennai under the editorship of T. S. Chokkalingam. At the price tag of quarter anna, it touched the circulation upto 25000 copies.

Content

Second part of V. O. Chidambaram Pillai's biography and Mahakavi Bharathi's biography written by Va. Ramaswami Iyengar were published as series through this periodical. "Gulabjaan Kaadhal" (Love for Gulab jamun) - the first short story of Pudhumaithan got its first print through Gandhi magazine. It also published English translation of Tirukkural.

Termination

The journal involved in freedom struggle intensely. Statement issued by Rajaji against the arrest of Gandhi in 1932 was published in Gandhi. The magazine was confiscated and penalised one hundred rupees, T. S. Chokkalingam imprisoned for six months. Gandhi came out as weekly twice, daily and sometimes monthly as well. When Bihar earthquake occured in 1934 that took away many people's lives, T. S. Chokkalingam considered the government didn't took enough action on the issue which led him to wrote a harsh article titled 'Sarkar yenge?' (Where is the government?). He was accused of treason and Gandhi magazine banned. It didn't came after 1934.
