வின்சென்ட் ஆர்தர் ஸ்மித்
வின்சென்ட் ஆர்தர் ஸ்மித் (Vincent Arthur Smith, ஜூன் 3, 1843 – பெப்ருவரி 6,1920) டப்லினில் பிறந்த இந்தியவியலாளர், வரலாற்றெழுத்தாளர், இந்திய ஆட்சிப் பணியாளர், அருங்காட்சியகக் காப்பாளர்(curator).
பேரரசர் அசோகர், முகலாயப் பேரரசர் அக்பர் உட்பட இந்திய ஆட்சியாளர்கள் பலரைப் பற்றி இவர் நூல்கள் எழுதியுள்ளார். இந்திய, மற்றும் இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்த நுண் கலைகள் பற்றி நூல்கள் எழுதினார்.
பிறப்பு, கல்வி
வின்சென்ட் ஆர்தர் ஸ்மித் அயர்லாந்த் டப்ளினின் ஜூன் 3, 1843 அன்று புகழ்பெற்ற ஐரிஷ் மருத்துவர், நாணயவியலாளர், தொல்துறை ஆய்வாளரான அக்வில்லா ஸ்மித்திற்கு பதின்மூன்று குழந்தைகளில் மூன்றாவது மகனாகப் பிறந்தார். பள்ளிப்படைப்பை அயர்லாந்தில் முடித்தார். டப்ளின் ட்ரினிடி கல்லூரியில் இளங்கலைப் பட்டம் பெற்றார்.
தனி வாழ்க்கை
1871-ல் இந்திய ஆட்சிப் பணித் தேர்வில் சிறந்த மதிப்பெண்களுடன் தேர்வாகி அவத் பகுதியை உள்ளடக்கிய வடமேற்கு மாகாணத்தில் (Northwest frontier) நிலத்தீர்வை அதிகாரியாகப் பணியாற்றினார். 1898-ல் தலைமைச் செயலராகப் பதவி உயர்வு பெற்றார். 1871-ல் மேரி எலிசபெத்தை மணந்து கொண்டார். குழந்தைகள் மூன்று மகன்கள், ஒரு மகள்.
இந்தியவியல்/வரலாற்றாய்வு
ஆட்சிப்பணியில் இருந்தபோதே இந்திய வரலாற்றைப் பற்றி கட்டுரைகளும் நூல்களும் எழுதினார். 1875-ல் 'புந்தேல்கண்ட் பகுதியின் நாட்டுப்பாடல்கள், மூத்த குடியினர் மற்றும் வரலாறு பற்றிய அவரது ஆய்வுக்கட்டுரைகள் Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal வெளியிட்ட சஞ்சிகைகளில் வெளிவந்தன. 'Notes on the Bhars and Other Early Inhabitants of Bundelkhand' என்ற நூலையும் எழுதினார். வட இந்தியாவின் வரலாற்றை கலைச் சீனங்களிலிருந்து எழுதும் பணியை மேற்கொண்டார். 1900-ல் பதவியிலிருந்து விலகி, ஆய்வுப்பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ள தாயகம் திரும்பினார். ஆக்ஸ்ஃபோர்ட் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் ஜான்ஸ் கல்லூரியில் இந்தியவியல் கழகத்தின் பொறுப்பாளராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டார்.
In his Early History of India he first placed the chronology on a sound basis. This was followed by biographies of the Buddhist Emperor Asoka and Akbar the Great Moghul, and the History of Fine Art in India and Ceylon. His admirable Oxford History of India, published a few months before his death was reviewed in Folk-Lore (vol. xxx. 245). He was a skilled numismatist and catalogued the great collection in the cabinet of the Indian Museum, Calcutta. At the close of his life he received the Companionship of the Order of the Indian Empire, the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature the University of Dublin, and the Gold Medal of the Royal Asiatic Society. He enjoyed the friendship of many scholars to whom he readily imparted his vast knowledge of Oriental history and antiquities
