Living Tamil

Living Tamil Award for World Literature is an award presented by the international Tamil literary fraternity, Living Tamil, for outstanding contributions to world literature. With a prize of ten million Indian rupees (approximately US$105,000 as on 2026), it is one of the largest literary awards in the world. It is unique in being funded entirely by the contributions of a readers' movement. Throughout the year, members of the Living Tamil fraternity discuss books at gatherings held worldwide and collectively select the winning author.

The Organizational Structure

The Living Tamil organization has a worldwide structure. It consists primarily of three bodies: an Advisory Committee comprising thirty members from various countries, an Executive Committee consisting of thirty young readers of literature, and a General Body comprising several hundred readers. In addition, more than twenty online groups meet weekly or monthly to discuss literature.

The Method of Selection

The Living Tamil Literary Award is presented to an author in recognition of their overall contribution to world literature. Authors writing in any language are eligible for the award.

Nominations are invited from literary critics and readers. The Living Tamil fraternity discusses the nominated authors and their works through its worldwide units and collectively draws up a longlist of candidates. The shortlisted books are then discussed in the pages of South Bound Review, the literary magazine of Living Tamil, following which the shortlist is announced. A jury committee is then formed to select the final winner.

Living Tamil believes that every literary award should be supported by a readers' movement rather than an institution. Appointing established jurors from outside the fraternity is not part of the selection process for this award, as jurors inevitably represent their own literary perceptions. The Living Tamil Award, by contrast, represents the collective literary perception of this particular fraternity, which is a worldwide intellectual movement. Therefore, the jury members will be selected exclusively from within this movement.

The prize

The award consists of ten million Indian rupees (approximately US$105,000), along with a gold medal and an award citation.

The award will be presented at a public ceremony organized by Living Tamil.

The Criteria for the Living Tamil Literary Award

The Living Tamil fraternity has a clear vision of literature. It believes in the aesthetics of literature, expressed through the form, style and imagery of a work. It does not consider writing driven primarily by political or sociological preconceptions to be serious literature. Literature must possess the spontaneity and intricacy of a dream.

The Living Tamil movement is opposed to writing produced merely for popular consumption. It considers literature an expression of the author's subconscious through images, a parallel life created in language, and an attempt to narrate and renarrate culture. Literature offers a life deeper than actual life, and readers turn to it to experience more lives and deeper lives.

The movement regards pseudo-philosophical theories that teach readers merely to decode and deconstruct literary works as academic exercises that have little to do with the experience of literature itself.

Living Tamil believes in the organic nature of literature and therefore opposes artificial experiments in form and language. It seeks to uphold the original strength of literature, which emerges from the ancient expressions of human emotion and thought: the story.
